On June 20, 2024, Dr. Ha Minh Hiep, Acting Director General of the Commission for the Standards, Metrology and Quality of Viet Nam (STAMEQ) received the delegation from the UNIDO’s project on “Increasing quality and standards compliance capacity of Mango value chain in Mekong River Delta Viet Nam” (hereinafter referred to as GQSP Viet Nam). The delegation was led by Mr. Nima Bahramalian, the Project Director.
The meeting was also attended by Mr. Tran Quy Giau, Director of STAMEQ Metrology Department, and representatives from the Institutes of Metrology and the International Cooperation Department.

The GQSP Viet Nam project is part of the Global Quality and Standards Programme (GQSP) implemented by UNIDO and funded by the Swiss Government through the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO). This project is a systematic approach to strengthen the quality and standards compliance capacity to facilitate market access for SMEs.
One of the key objectives of the GQSP project is to provide technical support to maintain stability and develop the technical measurement capacity of national metrology institutes by ensuring measurement standards in chemistry. Measurement standards in chemistry, also known as reference materials (RM), are the most critical technical foundation ensuring the uniformity, accuracy, and reliability of all measurements, as well as ensuring the necessary standard linkages in chemical metrology both nationally and internationally. Additionally, reference materials are used to validate measurement results, calibrate and verify measuring instruments in chemical analysis, assess methods, and test the proficiency of laboratories.

Given the increasing demand for reference materials from ministries, research institutes, and businesses, the project proposes to coordinate with the STAMEQ Metrology Department to conduct research to assess the needs and domestic production capacity of reference materials in the food sector. This assessment particularly focuses on the economic efficiency of domestic reference material production. From this research, policy recommendations and development orientations for reference materials in Viet Nam will be made.
During the working session, STAMEQ and the GQSP Viet Nam project discussed and agreed on the principles and content for implementing this collaborative research.
