Conference on Youth Education and the Future of Work in Manila, Philippines

Philippines Development Academy (DAP) recently cooperated with Asian Productivity Organization (APO) organized the Conference on Youth education and Future of work in Manila, Philippines.

The Conference on Youth Education and the Future of work took place on November 12 and 13 with the participation of more than 100 delegates from 13 different APO economies.

According to The APO’s Embracing New Ways of Work Report 2021 highlighted the need to renew teaching methodologies and curricula, develop competencies among teachers and education managers, upgrade educational infrastructure, and enhance lifelong learning to empower the workforce, particularly the youth, with advanced skills, knowledge, and socially responsible attitudes to navigate the future work environment.

Given that the Asia-Pacific region is home to more than half of the global youth population, this conference will serve as a platform for APO member economies to explore how governments and individuals can prepare for the future with the support of evolving technologies, underscoring the importance of revamping education systems and policies to meet future challenges and opportunities.

During the 2 days of the conference, the speakers presented strategies and ways to help the young generation develop their careers in the future.

The first presentation from Mrs. Linartes Viloria, International Labour Organization (ILO) Senior Specialist provided an overview of future workforce trends and challenges. In addition, she presented strategies and initiatives to ensure sustainable economic growth, as well as the key factors driving the future workforce (technology, demographic change, climate change, globalization) as set out in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8 of the United Nations.

In the next presentation, Dr. Lei Guo, one of the members of the Leadership Training Program in Information Technology in the School of Computer Science of the National University of Singapore, pointed out strategies to establish an enabling environment, equipping young people with the necessary skills when working in the digital economy as well as mechanisms to solve challenges in creative thinking.

Finally, Mr. Jairaj Mashru, International Advisor to the Global Creative Economy Council of India, has many future career scenarios based on the analysis of different geographies, industries and socio-economic groups. At the same time, in his presentation, Mr. Jairaj also proposed some discussions: Technological advances and changes; The development of research in labor groups; The impacts on future careers and ways of acting.

The Vietnamese delegation attended the conference, including young union members with active achievements in the Youth Union of the Commission for the Standards, Metrology and Quality of Viet Nam

The conference also held group discussions and case studies. Representatives of each country will be divided into groups to jointly present and share insights on the content in question, as well as propose solutions. During this conference, Vietnamese representatives also asked some questions related to how to solve the difficulties in solving the problem of youth unemployment, or how education and training policies can help young human resources meet the needs of the current digital age.
