On November 8, 2024, at the 94th Meetings of the WTO TBT Committee in Geneva – Switzerland, the WTO TBT Committee held a ceremony to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the TBT Agreement. Since its official entry into force, the WTO TBT Agreement has contributed to the implementation of important WTO objectives such as facilitating international trade, avoiding discrimination, and providing a common forum for countries to discuss the specific trade concerns in international trade.
Addressing the event, Director-General of WTO – Madame Okonjo-Iweala underlined the importance of the TBT Agreement throughout thirty years of implementation. She said: “The TBT Agreement has provided a multilateral framework for cooperation on standards and regulations — something members recognized specifically in the first-ever Ministerial Declaration on the TBT Agreement at The WTO’s 13th Ministerial Conference (MC13) earlier this year.”
The Director-General stressed that this declaration affirms the continued efforts of the Members under the Agreement in addressing current global trade challenges and emerging policy concerns, including climate change, the digital economy and global pandemics.
