IEC secretary general official visit to Vietnam

Ministry of Science and Technology and National Commission for Standards, Metrology and Quality (STAMEQ) and had a reception and working session with IEC Secretary General Mr. Philipp Metzger on the occasion of his official business trip to Vietnam on June 5 2024, within the framework of cooperation between IEC and STAMEQ under the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The IEC delegation includes Secretary General Philipp Metzger and Asia-Pacific Regional Director Dennis Chew. On the Vietnamese side, chaired by Deputy Minister Le Xuan Dinh, Acting President of STAMEQ Ha Minh Hiep and representatives of units under the Ministry and under STAMEQ.

This is the first time since his term that the IEC Secretary General has officially visited Vietnam, and is also a very good opportunity for Ministry and STAMEQ leaders to exchange, discuss directly, and propose activities and cooperation between IEC and Vietnam.

In recent times, STAMEQ has still actively participated in IEC activities in building and commenting on international standards within the allowed scope, participating in international conferences and seminars. economic and regional. The IEC Secretary General’s visit and working visit to Vietnam this time is an opportunity for the two sides to expand cooperation, moving towards Vietnam becoming a full member of the IEC.

Speaking at the meeting, Deputy Minister Le Xuan Dinh welcomed the delegation to Vietnam, expressing his desire for IEC to support and create conditions for Vietnam to become Full member of IEC and support participation in establish international standards; support Vietnam in developing national standards and regulations; Train a team of young experts to participate more deeply in IEC activities and programs.

Mr. Philipp Metzger, Secretary General of IEC, said that Vietnam is a country that is developing very quickly, especially for their focus on emerging technology fields such as artificial intelligence and electric vehicle… Currently, Vietnamese businesses are increasingly accessing IEC standards. Typically, national technical regulations on electric wires, cables, electrical and electronic equipment, explosion-proof electrical equipment, information technology… are developed by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and the Ministry of Information and Communications, and issued on the basis of reference to IEC standards. Many young Vietnamese experts have participated and contributed effectively to IEC activities.

In addition, in the working program, the IEC Secretary General and the delegation had a working session at the Commission headquarters with the participation of units under the Commission, members of the technical committee, representatives from the Associations and businesses involved in the field of electricity and electronics. At the meeting, IEC and the Commission had in-depth exchanges and experience sharing on the orientations and activities of IEC in general and in the Asia-Pacific region in particular, and cooperation plans in the future and general situation of standards and certification activities in the field of electricity and electronics in Vietnam.

The difference between these two types of members is also shown in the membership fee. In addition, there is also a “Partner” status with the purpose of encouraging and promoting member countries of this type to become associate members within 5 years.

In April 2002, Vietnam joined the IEC as an Associate Member. Vietnam is a P member (participating member) of 03 IEC Technical Committees:

  3. IEC/TC61, Safety of household and similar electrical appliances).
