With the goal of becoming a high-income developed country by 2045, the prerequisite for Vietnam is to maintain and increase productivity based on science, technology and innovation.
Speaking at Session 2 with the topic “Enhancing Productivity through Solutions based on Science, Technology and Innovation” (organized within the framework of the National Productivity Forum 2023), Mr. Nguyen Duc Hoang, Deputy Director of State Agency for Technology Innovation, Ministry of Science and Technology, said that in the socio-economic development strategy of a country as well as a locality, productivity is always a fundamental factor to achieve growth.
Productivity helps create more material wealth in limited resource conditions, improves the relationship between workers and managers, enhances the competitiveness of businesses and achieves strategic long-term goals.
Looking back at Vietnam’s development path in recent times, it can be seen that science, technology and innovation have made important and comprehensive contributions to economic and social development, creating breakthroughs in productivity, quality, efficiency and competitiveness of the economy, contributing to shifting the growth model and advancing higher in the value chain.
According to the Report summarizing the implementation of the 10-year socio-economic development strategy (2011-2020, building the 10-year socio-economic development strategy (2021-2030), the contribution index of factor productivity (TFP) in growth from 33.6% on average in the 2011-2015 period to 45.2% in the 2016-2020 period, for the 10-year total (2011-2020) reaching 39.0% (exceeding the target of 35%). The average productivity growth rate in the period 2016-2020 is 5.8%/year (higher than 4.3%/year in the period 2011-2015).
The above encouraging results are due to the efforts of businesses, organizations and the close direction of the Party and State of Vietnam. Many policies, programs and activities to improve productivity have been implemented in ministries, branches, localities and businesses such as: National program to support businesses to improve productivity and quality of goods and products in the period 2021-2030 (according to Decision No. 1322/QD-TTg dated August 31, 2020 of the Prime Minister); Master plan to improve productivity and quality based on science, technology and innovation for the period 2021-2030 (Decision No. 36/QD-TTg dated January 11, 2021 of the Prime Minister) .
Although Vietnam has achieved some important results in improving productivity, we still have to acknowledge the fact that labor productivity growth is still low compared to other countries in the region. With the goal of becoming a high-income developed country by 2045, the prerequisite must be maintaining and increasing productivity based on science, technology and innovation.
“In the coming time, scientific and technological progress and innovation will play an increasingly important role in productivity, especially in the context of the 4.0 Industrial Revolution. Today’s Session is an opportunity for us to capture information and exchange with domestic and international experts about solutions to help businesses improve productivity based on science, technology and innovation in the context of digital transformation and green transformation. I hope that at this Session, experts will share and contribute ideas to help organizations and businesses improve their competitiveness, market access capacity, develop new products, and improving their competitiveness through productivity and innovation,” said Mr. Nguyen Duc Hoang.
