Workshop promotes development of Halal industry in the South Central and Southeast coastal regions

On the morning of May 16, in Binh Thuan province, the Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality (STAMEQ) coordinated with the Department of Science and Technology of Binh Thuan province and the Institute of South Asia, West Asia and Africa Studies (ISAWAAS) of the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences organized a workshop on prospects and solutions to promote the Halal industry in the South Central Coast and Southeast regions. The workshop aimed to analyze and evaluate the potential to promote the Halal industry in the South Central and Southeast coastal regions as well as disseminate legal requirements, standards, and certification in the Halal industry for a number of key local products.

The workshop were participated by Mr Nguyen Minh – Vice Chairman of Binh Thuan Provincial People’s Committee; Dr. Ha Minh Hiep – Acting Director General of STAMEQ; Representatives of leaders of departments, branches, People’s Committees of districts, towns, cities, associations, organizations, and businesses in the province, along with representatives of regional agencies, organizations, and businesses coastal areas of the South Central and Southeast regions.

Speaking at the Workshop, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee – Nguyen Minh expressed his joy when the Workshop was held in Binh Thuan province. This is an opportunity for Binh Thuan to meet, share and promote its potential and is also an opportunity for localities to approach and discuss more deeply about the Halal field.

Vice Chairman of Binh Thuan Provincial People’s Committee also commented that to promote the Halal industry in the South Central and Southeast coastal regions in general and Binh Thuan province in particular, there are still many challenges. This includes building infrastructure, supply chains, and ensuring compliance with Halal regulations and standards. Accordingly, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee – Nguyen Minh expressed his hope that this workshop will be an opportunity to strongly promote two-way propaganda information between businesses and State management agencies to raise awareness, support and encourage the province’s businesses to produce products and services that meet Halal standards, associated with industry and local development planning to participate deeply and effectively in the global Halal market.

Dr. Ha Minh Hiep – Acting General Director of the Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality said: The Halal market is considered a potential market with rapid growth and an opportunity for businesses to promote export activities. However, in Vietnam, businesses still have difficulty finding information about Halal market culture, Halal standards, Halal certification process and especially achieving diverse and appropriate Halal certification with the specific requirements of each market.

Mr. Tran Quoc Dzung, Director of the Vietnam Certification Center (QUACERT) affirmed that the establishment of the National Halal Certification Authority (HALCERT) is an important milestone in the journey of building and developing the Halal industry of Vietnam in a comprehensive, methodical and professional manner. In the context that the Halal certification process in Vietnam is still quite complicated and there have been not harmonized with international standards yet, HALCERT will be the unit to support and provide businesses with accurate information about requirements in Halal production and services as well as such as Halal certification, creating favorable conditions for Vietnamese businesses to access the global Halal market.

Associate Professor, Dr. Dinh Cong Hoang – Institute of South Asian, West Asian and African Studies shared, that meeting high-quality “new generation” FTAs with markets with strict standards such as the EU, US, Japan … is an important foundation for Vietnam to access the world Halal market.
