Ethiopia – Vietnam: Promoting cooperation for mutual development in productivity and quality field

On November 22, 2023, a high-level Ethiopian delegation led by Dr. Negeri Lencho Bultum, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Human Resources, Labor and Technology, House of Representatives of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) ) as head of the delegation had a visit and working session with the Vietnam Directorate for Standards, Metrology and Quality (STAMEQ) with the topic: learning about Vietnam’s experience in support activities to improve productivity and establish the minimum wage associated with improving productivity at businesses. The delegation’s visit was jointly organized by the International Labor Organization (ILO) and the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung Institute (FES) with the presence of Ms. Ingrid Christensen – Director of the ILO Office in Vietnam and Mr. Timo Rinke, representative of FES Vietnam.

Participating in the meeting and working session was Dr. Ha Minh Hiep, Acting Director General of the STAMEQ, Mr. Nguyen Tung Lam, Head of the Vietnam National Productivity Institute, Mr. Pham Le Cuong, Deputy Chief of STAMEQ Office and productivity experts of the STAMEQ. The delegates listened to a presentation sharing the activities of the STAMEQ, as well as the contents of interest to the delegation, including national programs to support businesses in improving productivity, and the overall plan to improve productivity. based on science, technology and innovation as well as initiatives to support productivity improvement in past times.

Delegation were very impressed with the STAMEQ’s activities in past times, especially ongoing projects as well as development orientations in the future. The delegation was interested and asked many questions related to productivity improvement support activities and had a direct discussion session with productivity experts of the STAMEQ on specific contents: labor productivity growth in Vietnam and the relationship between increased labor productivity and increased wages for workers; Support from the government and relevant agencies to help businesses increase productivity and overcome difficulties during and after Covid19; criteria for evaluating labor productivity of state agencies; Industry productivity assessment activities and labor productivity support in some Vietnamese industries; Supporting the agricultural product processing industry, textiles and a number of export production industries, including exporting to the European market, which requires high product quality as well as strict requirements. Other criteria such as: sustainable enterprises, social responsibility, enterprises meeting green criteria… STAMEQ’s leaders and productivity experts also shared Vietnam’s experiences and orientation with the delegation.
