On 7th June 2024, within the framework of the official business trip to Vietnam of IEC Secretary General, Mr Dennis Chew, IEC Director for Asia-Pacific Region had a training session on IEC standards for more than 20 young, potential officials of STAMEQ.

At the training session, Mr. Dennis Chew presented an introduction to IEC standards and explained the value these standards bring, as well as the benefits of becoming a member of IEC. He also instructed participants on skills related to developing consensus in IEC committee/group meetings.
During the Bootcamp, Youth Union members participated in a simulated session of the National Committee’s discussions to develop a new IEC International Standard. Participants were assigned to a team that represents a fictional country and represented the National Committee (NC) of this imaginary country. The main role was to present team/NC’s views and worked with other NCs to reach a consensus outcome.

Participants were divided into four countries, with each individual playing a different role within their assigned country, such as a representative of a policy-making agency, a scientist, a researcher, a technical expert,… They jointly participated in discussions and provided opinions on the development of international standards.

Each group, corresponding to a country, then presented and defended its country’s opinions to achieve consensus with other groups (countries) in the voting process for developing standards.
Through the training session, Youth Union members not only gained knowledge about IEC standards but also had the opportunity to practice critical thinking, negotiation, teamwork, and especially, the ability to communicate and present in English.
